What’s In My Bag: 1 Month Backpacking List

As this post goes out to the world, my friend and I will be about to (hopefully) make it to Poland. As is the deal with all my June posts, this one is pre-written so there’s a chance I’m not where this post thinks I am. But, if everything goes to plan, I have spent several days exploring Athens and have now come across Europe to see the beautiful sights of Warsaw. From here, I will be hopping over to Prague, then staying in Amsterdam for a while before making my way across the pond to New York. If you haven’t already realised, this is a diverse adventure: packing things that suit all of the stops on this trip is not exactly going to be the easiest task.

But fear not. I have a little experience travelling (pretty) light, and I’m going to do everything I can to keep the weight down for this trip. After all, the carry-on limit on one of our planes is 8kg…

Clothes

Clothes are probably going to make up the bulk of the bag on any trip so it’s vital to get this bit right. The most important thing when researching what clothing to take on a trip is of course the climates you’ll be travelling through. Based on the places I’m visiting, the lowest temperature is likely to be in Poland, which can dip to 12ºC, and the hottest we’re likely to face is in Greece, dancing around the low thirties. We’re probably going to see a few rainy days, but mostly a mix of sun and cloud. With that in mind, here are the clothes I’m taking with me:

Pair of jeans x1

Pair of cotton trousers x1

Pair of shorts x2

Pair of leggings x1

T-shirts x6

Long-sleeved shirt x1

Enough underwear for a couple of days

Light raincoat x1

Fleece x1

Hoodie x1

Trainers

Documents and Important Bits

Passport

Photocopy of passport

Printouts of tickets/travel insurance/American ESTA visa

Debit card/Travel cash card/Student ID

Cash in local currencies

Tech

Phone

Camera

Kindle

Plug converters

Chargers

Toiletries

Toothbrush and paste

Travel towel

Hairbrush and hairbands

Travel shampoo/conditioner/soap

Deodorant

Suncream

Earplugs

Moisturiser

Plasters

Painkillers

Other

Travel journal and pen

Headphones

Small day backpack

Sunglasses

Money belt

Luggage lock

At the time of writing, I haven’t quite finished the packing process, so there might be a few extra items sneaking their way into my backpack. But this is the list of the most important things I’m taking with me. What are your holiday essentials?

Whenever i go away im only ever have to pack stuff for hot countries like shorts and maybe a jacket in case the nights are chilly but i can imagine when travelling in various different countries it’s really vital to know what clothes you’re gonna pack!

I’m pretty minimalist. Clothing choices are based comfort, the need to be presentable at temples/churches/etc, and washability. I’m too cheap to pay to get my clothes laundered, so fast-drying is ideal

I’ve always wondered what people take on long trips to various different countries. I can easily pack a full suitcase when I’m going on holiday for a week so no idea how I would choose the right things for a longer holiday. This sounds like a really sensible list, you have definitely thought of everything. I hope you are having an awesome time Alys! I’ve enjoyed seeing snippets of your trip on insta stories, it looks fantastic! 💖 xx
