My 8 Self-Care Spring Rituals ft. Mia

Spring is a time of growth and fresh starts; if the daffodils have the courage and strength to push their way up into the sunlight after such a long and cold winter then we can at least try too. The sun has been shining the last few days and my mood has definitely taken notice. I have more energy, am finding it easier to get up early and feel like negative things have less impact on me. Oh, and I can actually wear shorts without risking frostbite. So there’s that!

The world is beginning to thaw out a little and people are starting to crack out the barbecues. This weather actually makes me want to get out more and be a little more sociable (I know right, shock horror for an introvert like me) and so this feels like the perfect time to take part in a wonderful collab with a wonderful human being, Mia from Beautiful, Creative, Inspiring Life.

Her posts are always super aesthetically pleasing too, so go take a peak if you haven’t already, and make sure to read her latest post!

For this collab we’re going to get well and truly carried away with the floral vibes and talk about spring rituals. What I really want to share with you all today is a list of the things that I’m doing over the next few weeks to show myself a little love and care in the run up to summer.

So without further ado, here are my 2018 self-care spring rituals…

Early starts

This is super basic but can also be super hard. For the month of April I’ve been challenging myself to wake up early, resist the snooze button and get moving. This has been made a lot easier as the sun has been rising earlier too, and the beautiful weather practically pulls me out from under the duvet. Getting up early is a great routine to get into: it allows you to make the most of the morning and get ready for the day without rushing around. Perhaps it even gives you time to make that healthier, slightly more time consuming breakfast.

Fruitier breakfasts

So you’ve managed to drag yourself down to the kitchen at 7am, what are you going to eat? Introducing more fruit into the morning gives you a healthy energy boost and gets a handful of your fruit portions in for the day, all before you’ve done anything else! Summer is the optimum time for homemade smoothies and refreshing nicecream, so I’d suggest to invest in a good blender. Even just a simple fruit salad gives your body the nourishment it needs for the morning.

Getting outside

Going on a walk, even just for fifteen minutes around your neighbourhood, is a great way to show yourself some love. It gives you time to think, plenty of fresh air and maybe even some vitamin D if you’re lucky; if the sun is shining, there’s definitely no excuse.

Bringing the outside in

If your daily routine doesn’t allow you to get outside much, and even if it does, a great mood booster in spring is the presence of flowers and life flourishing all around you. Pop a couple of houseplants on your desk or grow some flowers on your windowsill. I spent a little time yesterday planting sunflower seeds in little pots, and just focussing on such a specific task for a dedicated amount of time felt like a great way to look after my wellbeing.

Exercise

This is a great way to tick off many self-care boxes in one go: you’re improving your physical health, boosting your mood, and perhaps getting outside and being sociable too. This month I’ve taken up basketball and running, and although I sometimes don’t want to get going, I always feel better afterwards. Regular exercise is a great way to practice sticking to good habits as well.

Decluttering

If you read one of my recent posts about decluttering my wardrobe, you’ll know how strongly I believe that a good clear out can do wonders for your mental health. It helps you to recognise what material possessions bring value to your life and what items are just bogging you down. A clearer space helps to create a clearer mind too, allowing you to dedicate more mental energy to yourself and the things you find important.

Using floral shampoos

Around this time of year I normally find myself switching up my hair routine and introducing something a little more floral to the shower. Recently I’ve been using a nordic berries shampoo which has such a fruity smell it wakes up all the senses in my body. I think it’s nice to be able to associate a shampoo smell with summer, so I sometimes return to products I’ve used in previous years to bring back those happy, carefree feelings.

Fresher meals

Don’t get me wrong, I will devour a stodgy vegan macaroni cheese all year round, but by the time April is well and truly wriggling its way into my life I start to look towards eating foods that aren’t always comfort in edible form. Things like falafel wraps begin appearing on the weekly menu, and my tongue is often grateful to rediscover some different flavours.

IMG_2770.JPGWhat this little list has highlighted for me is that spring is a great time to refresh your senses: your eyes with plants, your nose with floral scents, your tastebuds with fruity, fresh flavours, and your skin with sunlight and air. It is also a perfect opportunity to clear your mind and re-establish good habits that might have slipped over the winter months.

    I’ve also been trying to wake up early now. I feel like I’m more motivated to do things in the morning than at nighttime. Getting outside works great for me! Weather is now warm enough to take my usual walks 😉

    Oh your list is incredible. I especially love the ‘Bring the outside in’ and ‘Earlier starts’ because I totally agree! All in all I think you’ve set the perfect spring morning, you know like: an early start eating fruity breakfast to the smell of fresh flowers. I mean what’s not to like? ❤ xx

    I really want to start planting herbs and flowers this year because I think they really brighten up a room. Never thought to change up my shampoos with the seasons but it sounds quite fun to do. xx

    🤔 hmm, my top spring rituals?
    • Spring cleaning is a must – I definitely agree with you!
    • having a tea every morning but I do this all year round 😂
    • sleeping in during my break (yeah, I know it’s bad but when your classes started at 8am for the past 3 months, it’s nice to finally relax)
    • more walks. Although difficult, definitely helps with mental clarity. I agree with you.
    • growing plants indoors. My parents do this but the only thing I can keep alive are bean sprouts. While visiting my husband for a couple of weeks, the one thing I made sure to pack was my massive jar and dried mung beans! I will be sprouting them while I’m here.
    • adult colouring and sending mail again. During the spring and summer I love doing this hobby. It feels good to give to others and I love sending them something personal from across the country.

    It’s so important to practice self-care! Love these tips, especially the one about fruitier breakfasts! Great way to start your morning with natural energy. It’s so important to go outside!     Decluttering during Spring is essential, I always feel like I need to be minimalist whenever Spring rolls round and get rid of any items I don’t use or want anymore. Finally got the hang of Depop and Ebay, managed to shift a lot of old clothes, unused makeup and unopened gifts over the past month

    I love this post! These are all such great ways to get the most out of the spring season. I love the idea of bringing the outside in! At the moment, I have a lot of artificial flowers. Now might be the time to replace them with real ones!

    This was such an interesting post! I love having a good tidy up and decluttering. I have to get up early during the week for work so I let myself have a bit of a lie in at the weekends to catch up with my sleep! Haha. I was getting into exercise before we moved out, with cycling but the bike got put away – I really need to get it out again and back into it. I do miss it!

    Great post! I am trying t get up earlier and be better to myself. Self care is so important! I see a lot of tips for self care including going outside or gardening but I’ve never really seen anyone mention bringing the outside in! I’m hoping to move in the near future but when I do, I hope that at the very least, I can get some fresh herbs in the kitchen.
